Someone wrote me to ask if they can trust their inner sense of fullness to guide them more than outer signs and coincidences. This is what I wrote back:
My sense is that you can trust that inner fullness much more than any external signs. And the challenge is to trust it even when it seems to not be here. When you feel empty or contracted, that is also your inner guidance operating. It can kind of work like the kids game where someone tells you are getting warmer or you are getting colder. You need both the warmer and the colder to know how close you are, and which direction you are headed.
However, the really wonderful thing about listening inside more than outside is not that it gets you somewhere, to the right place or to where you need to go, but rather that it brings you to the fullness of your Being that is already here right now. It turns out that it does not matter that much what happens in life or whether you make the right choice or the wrong choice. What matters is the rich endless mysteries to be found in the awareness that notices where you end up every moment. Even what we might call external signs are really all pointing to what is here already. The value in paying attention to what is happening around you is not where it leads you, but simply what is shows you about yourself right now. You are a limitless source of everything that really matters: peace, joy, love etc. And all of it is available right now and in every moment, even if you end up taking the wrong bus to nowhere!
