The Mystery of Dreaming
The Mystery of Dreaming

Q: What of dreaming? I experience 2 types of dreaming, when I am sleeping. One type is more observational and one is extremely vivid, which over the years I’ve called “true dreams”, only because they repeat in my waking life a few days later. Something else, that I don’t consider as dreams, just a bit disconcerting, which I’ve experienced for more than 50 years, a type of screen, maybe a portal, floats down in front of me, and I see a view, sometimes words, that I later learn were occurring in that moment. I appreciate your writings I’ve read thus far, I have been comforted by your suggestions and was especially comforted by “I don’t know”. That has been my mantra for many years. Perhaps I don’t need to know about the dreams and viewings, just let it be. Perhaps it is only the “thinking, gotta fix it” mind that seeks the answers. In advance, thank you. Enjoy a blessed day.
A: I also do not know what to believe about dreams. I like that you described two different kinds of dreams, and I would guess that there are a much larger number of different experiences that we call dreams. This world we experience while waking is so varied and has so many levels of subtlety, and so it simply makes sense that the dream world would also be incredibly varied.
So I am with you that perhaps we do not need to know anything final or definite about dreams. Paradoxically, when we are willing to not know is when we are sometimes blessed with a deep and profound knowing in the moment. I used to joke that the mystery works on a "need to know basis" just like the secret parts of the government. When we need to know something is when we spontaneously know it.
Not knowing also invites an endless curiosity about the many possibilities in our life. It can be so rich and endlessly surprising to let life unfold in its own mysterious fashion.
